"Tasting Tips" - What are meditation wines?

Generally when you buy a bottle of wine you do so with the pairing for a specific dish in mind. But what if you want to taste a glass instead, just for the pleasure of it? Here comes the "meditation wine."

This expression was coined by Italian oenologist Luigi Veronelli. His intent was to denote sweet, ample and complex dessert wines as well as important red wines that have a long process behind them and spend a long aging period before they can be tasted.

This term is used to define wines characterized by their very intense aromas and unique flavors, the characteristics and multiple nuances of which can best be grasped by tasting them on their own. They may have different characteristics that make them valuable and allow for experiences that fully engage the senses.

Each meditation wine has different characteristics that take drinking to the next level, engaging all the senses and leading to a unique experience.

These are generally dessert wines or those reds whose production involves a long journey from harvest to bottle, as well as a special process. That is, a process of forced drying through which the grapes, before being used, are allowed to dry at controlled temperature and humidity.

This results in a product with a high concentration of aromas and flavors, as well as a higher alcohol content. This makes them taste warm to the palate.

Meditation wines are often paired with desserts because of their sweet, soft and velvety notes.

Tasting them requires time and quiet, respect and contemplation, allowing one to best appreciate and reflect on the story the glass itself tells by stimulating the taste buds. Only in this way can one understand the complexity and multiple nuances of these wines.

They are perfect for special occasions or moments of relaxation, because, sipped calmly and savored slowly, they are able to intoxicate us by leading us to an experience so pleasant that the memory of their excellent and intense flavor is indelible for both nose and palate.

I our meditation wines!

Among our meditation wines we find:

  • the White IGT Veneto Passito wine "Alba Chiara", with a warm, persistent flavor with aromatic nuances reminiscent of honey and apricot jam;
  • and the Raboso of Pi.ave DOC Vino Passito "Donna Luna" 2020, with a distinct aroma of blackberry jam, morello cherry, underbrush fruit and chocolate.

We also find our Malanotte del Piave DOCG "Il Barbarossa", obtained from a long aging in barrels and barriques before refining in the bottle. A wine with very elegant and complex aromas that give off hints of morello cherry and cherry. It is reminiscent of cocoa and berries. The aromas then also deepen spicy hints of pepper and licorice.

Also this year. "Il Barbarossa" has been a source of pride and satisfaction for us thanks to the numerous awards received, which testify to the care and attention we pay to each stage of its production, from the vineyard to the winery.

Malanotte del Piave DOCG is the ultimate expression of Raboso del Piave and its territory. An austere, full-bodied wine with elegant and complex aromas. Intense and full, with adequate acidity that recalls the typicality of the Raboso grape from which it is derived.

We are therefore very proud to present this year's awards.

Regarding the 2019 vintage, awards received include:

  • The Red Seal at the Merano Wine Festival 2023. The iconic event for the food and wine industry that pursues the goal of exalting the excellence of the national and international food and wine industry.
  • Diploma of Merit to Enoconegliano 2023, which aims to introduce consumers to the best regional wine production and stimulate the efforts of wineries in improving product quality.
  • Diploma of Great Merit at the 47th Mostra dei Vini Triveneti in Camalò 2023.

While the 2018 vintage was included in the Vinibuoni d'Italia 2023 guide, the only guide dedicated to wines from indigenous Italian grape varieties, which emphasizes local roots, terroir and typicality.
